The digital availability of some of the timeless classics of comics history has been a great discovery for me. I absolutely love these old issues, and they serve as a great way to break up the occasional monotony of everyday comic reading. Fantastic Four #1 was published on Nov 10, 1961. It was written by Stan Lee and Joe Casey, and penciled by Jack Kirby and Chris Weston.
Story:
The story here was written by the legendary Stan Lee and Joe Casey, and is wonderfully crafted. The dialogue is hilarious and entertaining. I love that there is just one guard at the space station, and the FF have no time wait for official clearance...I mean they are just going to borrow the rocket, right? You could pick apart the details all you want, but it's 50 years old, and in all seriousness, the story is completely entertaining and exactly what you would want from a first issue. We also get a guest appearance from one of my favorite FF villains...Moleman!
8.5/10
Art:
The art is much better than I expected. The nice digital conversion has probably enhanced the colors of the book. The classic Jack Kirby look is obvious from the first page and his character designs are as timeless as always. I'm always amazed at just how much the artists of the time were able to do with so little. They had no Photoshop, no tablets, no fancy color palettes to work with, yet they always captured the essence of sequential storytelling.
8/10
Overall:
This was a great way to spend a half an hour on a weekend. The classic tale we all know by heart is told perfectly and illustrated beautifully
