Review-a-day #8 - New First Issues: Axe Cop Bad Guy Earth #1(of 3)

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 by Travis
Continuing this first issue review session...Axe Cop has become an internet sensation. Written by (you guessed it) 6 year old Malachai Nicolle and drawn by his 30 year old brother Ethan Nicolle, it is a tale of incredible imagination and craziness. This is the first in a 3-part limited series, and is no exception to the crazy rule.

Story:

This kid should make some writers out their bow their heads in shame. Every Axe Cop story is bursting with imagination, and while I wouldn't necessarily want every story to be like this, it is a nice change from the continuity-laden stories we plow through every week. Some praise must also be given to older brother Ethan, as he undoubtedly massages the storyline ever-so-slightly so that it reads better.

 8.5/10

Art:

I think Ethan Nicolle often gets the short end of the praise-stick (different than the everything stick). His art is perfectly suited to this story - not too overbearing so as to outshine the writing, but nice enough to spend some time looking at, and in color too this time! If you've checked out Chumble Spuzz (his other work) available from his blog or checked out some of his sketches and character designs you will recognize that he is a very talented artist.

7.5/10

Overall:

There's nothing else like this in comics. Funny, interesting, and carefree...I will definitely be picking up all 3 of these issues!

8/10
