I love first issues...the possibility of a great new comic awaits only your fingers opening the cover of the book. As I am still catching up on many of the so-called bigger books, I don't get a ton of "current" issue reading done until usually about a month after an issue comes out. This past week I had a whole shit-load of new number ones which I've decided to quickly review (mainly to figure out if I liked them!) in a series of posts over the next couple days...

This is a new Image series I heard about a while ago on the
Comic Geek Speak podcast. It sounded interesting enough and I really liked the attitude of the creator (he told a story about how he walked into the Marvel building one day and asked to speak to the editor...without so much as an appointment)...plus the preview art looked great! It is apparently an 8-year collaborative creation between Hoang Nguyen, Khari Evans, Kinsun Loh, and Mike Kennedy, who worked tirelessly to create the digitally painted steampunk world the book is set in.
Story:
The story here was...um, I really don't know what the story was actually. But that's not a bad thing. We were exposed to an expansive world and a number of plot pieces which will undoubtedly be explored in future issues. I'm not sure if this is a continuing or limited series, but this first issue did the important work of laying some background to the story, even if it was a bit confusing.

Art:
Wow! You can tell some time and effort went into this book...the digitally painted steampunk look is pulled off to perfection here. The artists use some fantastically creative layouts, as well as a generally larger scale to better display their gorgeous artwork. Just check out these pages!!

Overall:
Sexy, violent, and with some beautiful art...this should be an interesting read and definitely will have me coming back for the next issue.
