Review-a-day #11 - Catwoman: When in Rome

Continuing the Loeb-Sale journey...Catwoman: When in Rome.

Story:

I liked this story a little more than Superman for All Seasons, mostly because of the "caper" feel of the majority of Bat-U stories. I thought Loeb set up an interesting story, not so much a mystery in the same sense as The Long Halloween or Dark Victory, but no less compelling. He did a great job of capturing the different sides of the complex character that is Catwoman. I enjoyed how he made the story and writing feel less serious by inserting some jokes and back-and-forth dialogue. I mean, who can resist the Riddler dressed up in drag? All in all a very satisfying story!

Art:

Can we please get Tim Sale on a regular monthly book?! Honestly, what more is there to say, if you haven't seen Tim Sale art you need to check out one of his books. His art here is perhaps the best I've seen from him so far. The layouts are very cool with some nice slanted pages, the classic one and two-page spreads are as awe-inspiring as always, the details in the city are outstanding...everything is perfect. This is no doubt helped along by the addition of the tremendous Dave Stewart who brings a beautiful and bold colour palette to Sale's art.

And can I just say that this is a perfect example of how women SHOULD be drawn - respectful, strong, beautiful, and sexy without being cheesecakey. Even though she's essentially sans-clothes for a large part of the book, it never feels exploitative or awkward...well, there is that one thong scene...but other than that it always comes across respectful of the female body.

Overall:

This is a story that I think is skipped over by a lot of comic fans out there, and it really shouldn't be. You can pick up the trade for cheap at instocktrades, and there's also a beautiful Hardcover edition if that's more your style. In any case, miss this one at your own peril!
