So I figured that this blog wouldn't make much sense if I didn't give any background. So this semester, my last in this round of university, I am taking an English course for Science writing. My professor, in his infinite wisdom, has recommended that we start a blog since (apparently) practicing your writing can make you a better writer. As a result, I started a blog on Science (found here if you are interested). I have (so far) enjoyed this adventure into blogging and thought maybe I would venture into one I wasn't being "forced" to do and thus could have a little more freedom with. But what to write about? Yesterday on my walk to school it finally hit me...I should write about my foray back into the world of comics and graphic novels!
Like almost every kid, I read some comics as a kid. These were mostly my uncle's and dad's old comics (from the 70's and 80's I presume) and included the Avengers, Amazing and Spectacular Spider-man, Jonah Hex, Thor, etc. and Tin-tin in Tibet (probably my all-time favorite). As I grew older, I didn't really know anyone into comics and got into sports, science, girls, and the like, and never really gave comics a thought (I did pick up a Spider-man comic or two from the drugstore along the way). A year ago, I transferred to the University of Victoria (away from my girlfriend and family) and found that I had a ton of spare time. After a couple of months, I was getting kind of bored and couldn't find any new books or movies of TV shows that I wanted to take a look at and was searching for something new. While listening to an episode of the Science..sort of podcast, I heard them talking about some comics (although I can't remember at this time which one comic it was) and I figured it was time to try some out. I loved the new Batman movies, Sin City, Watchmen, Hellboy, etc. and realized that the library had a whole bunch of these. I read a couple of Batman trades (I didn't know what they were called then) and liked them...so being a bid podcast listener I decided to take a listen to a few comics podcasts and stumbled upon iFanboy, Comic Geek Speak, 11 o'clock comics, etc.
This blog is going to be in two parts...recapping my first year or so of getting back into comics, and blogging about comics I am currently reading (and hopefully enjoying). I would LOVE recommendations (that is, if anyone ever reads this!) and feedback on if you agree/disagree with my assessments. In addition, it will probably also be interspersed with other things I feel like writing about but cannot in my other blog...
Hope you enjoy it!
